Emergence and Computability

This paper presents a discussion of the possible influence of incomputability and the incompleteness of the mathematics as a source of apparent emergence in complex systems. The suggestion is made that the analysis of complex systems as a specific instance of a complex process may be subject to inaccessible “emergence”. We discuss models of computation associated with transcending the limits of...

Contents Incomputability, Turing Functionals, and Open Computing

For the first time in the history of computability a mojor objective was to investigate incomputability. The key researchers from 1931 to 1936 introduced a number of formal concepts to define computable functions, but the intention was do diagonalize over all computable functions to produce an unsolvable problem in ordinary mathematics, in order to refute Hilbert’s Entscheidungsproblem. These c...

Computability and Incomputability

The conventional wisdom presented in most computability books and historical papers is that there were several researchers in the early 1930’s working on various precise definitions and demonstrations of a function specified by a finite procedure and that they should all share approximately equal credit. This is incorrect. It was Turing alone who achieved the characterization, in the opinion of...

On the Computability of Solomonoff Induction and Knowledge-Seeking

Solomonoff induction is held as a gold standard for learning, but it is known to be incomputable. We quantify its incomputability by placing various flavors of Solomonoff’s prior M in the arithmetical hierarchy. We also derive computability bounds for knowledge-seeking agents, and give a limit-computable weakly asymptotically optimal reinforcement learning agent.

Incomputability of Simply Connected Planar Continua

Le Roux and Ziegler asked whether every simply connected compact nonempty planar Π 1 set always contains a computable point. In this paper, we solve the problem of le Roux and Ziegler by showing that there exists a planar Π 1 dendroid without computable points. We also provide several pathological examples of tree-like Π 1 continua fulfilling certain global incomputability properties: there is ...
